Efforts to end Sudan’s devastating civil war are back
Efforts to end Sudan’s devastating civil war are back in focus after United States (US) and Sudanese military leaders appeared at the same diplomatic event in Egypt.
The encounter follows a tense moment less than two weeks ago when Washington denied a US visa to Sudanese army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan ahead of his United Nations (UN) General Assembly appearance, a move linked to Khartoum’s resistance to a US-backed ceasefire plan.
US Senior Advisor Massad Boulos, who attended the lunch hosted by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, said Washington stands ready to support comprehensive dialogue among Sudanese political forces toward a future roadmap.
The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023 has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, displacing over 14 million people.
The US maintains that neither warring party represents legitimate governance, having accused the Rapid Support Forces of genocide and the army of war crimes, allegations both sides deny.
