SA’s systemic government failure

Concerns over systemic government failure and a lack of accountability within South African (SA) law enforcement structures have come under focus at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System known as Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Political analyst and public policy specialist from Witwatersrand School of Governance, Matlala Setlhalogile, says the testimony heard so far points to deep rooted governance failures, particularly in the absence of clear oversight and accountability at senior leadership level.
Setlhalogile says the actions of former Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, especially decisions taken while in leadership raise serious questions about accountability within the police service.
He was reacting to Sibiya’s testimony on the fourth day at the commission.
Sibiya has been under questioning over the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team and the seizure of 121 case dockets.
During his testimony, Sibiya admitted that the task team was disbanded without any formal review process
Sibiya continues to testify before the Madlanga Commission, as the inquiry probes allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, and failures in leadership within law enforcement agencies.
