Tanzania’s advocates for people with hearing impairments are working to raise 100 million Tanzanian Shillings ($38 000) to launch a specialised medical sign language publication aimed at improving communication in the health sector.

The initiative is expected to help bridge communication gaps between healthcare workers and patients who are deaf or hard of hearing, a challenge that has long affected access to quality care.

Speaking on the development, Dar es Salaam-based independent analyst Navile Meena said the project addresses a critical but often overlooked issue.

“Many patients with hearing impairments struggle to explain their symptoms or understand medical advice. A guide like this could make a real difference in how they receive care,” Meena explained.

The proposed publication will focus on standardising medical-related sign language, making it easier for both healthcare professionals and patients to communicate clearly in clinical settings.

If successful, the initiative could mark an important step towards more inclusive healthcare in Tanzania, particularly for communities that have historically faced barriers within the system.
