Tanzanian authorities have imposed a night-time curfew in Dar es Salaam after a tense election day marked by scattered clashes between protesters and police. Several people were reported injured during the confrontations.
The curfew took effect at 18:00 CAT, with police saying it was necessary to restore order in the commercial capital. The United States Embassy has advised its staff to remain indoors until further notice.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to secure a second term, though the vote has been marred by controversy following the disqualification of two prominent opposition candidates, a decision that has fuelled anger among supporters and sparked protests in parts of the city.
Internet access has also been disrupted nationwide, with many users unable to connect to social media and messaging platforms.
