Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, has accused police of wounding at least 16 of its supporters during the ongoing treason trial of party Chairperson Tundu Lissu.
The alleged incident took place outside a court in Dar es Salaam, where a group of Chadema supporters had gathered to follow the proceedings. Police have not yet commented on the matter.
In a statement, Chadema said several of those injured were receiving treatment in hospital after being forcibly removed from the court premises. The hearing has been adjourned until tomorrow.
During the proceedings, Lissu questioned why a sentencing date had been set before the trial had even begun. The opposition leader is facing treason charges, which, if he is found guilty, could carry the death penalty.
