Tanzania is experiencing a trade surplus with countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with exports nearly tripling over the past five years.
Officials say exports to the regional bloc have largely been driven by gold shipments and growing regional demand.
The development comes as African countries push for deeper economic integration and increased trade within the continent.
Cargo trucks destined for Southern African countries are a common sight on Tanzanian roads.
According to government figures, last year was a great year for Tanzanian exports to SADC countries.
Minister of Industry and Trade Judith Kapinga says: “In 2025, the value of goods sold within the SADC market reached about $3.05 billion, compared to about $2.56 billion the previous year, representing an increase of 19.4%.”
Authorities say gold dominates the export basket, making up over 75% of Tanzania’s total exports to SADC countries, with the rest consisting of agricultural products and manufactured goods.
