African Union (AU) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has appointed former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete as the AU high representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
Kikwete is set to support the continental body’s efforts to address the complex political, peace and security dynamics across the region.
The AU is confident that Kikwete will make a significant contribution to support countries in the region in addressing prevailing challenges and advance durable peace.
The AU adds that this a vital engagement given the strategic importance of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea for the international trade and the broader stability of the African continent.
The AU high representative will further work with the regional blocs such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the East African Community, League of Arab states and other structures.
