Analyst brands Tanzania a police state as ruling party panics over election fraud

The Tanzanian government’s abrupt ban on political rallies is a dead giveaway that the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party is terrified its own landslide election victory won’t hold up to scrutiny.

Speaking to Rise and Shine, Policy and Political Analyst Deus Kibamba revealed that internal cracks and recent slips by municipal election directors have left CCM running scared. Kibamba argues the sudden crackdown has less to do with actual security threats and more to do with a regime panicking over being frozen out by the United States and Brussels, as well as mounting pressure from the International Criminal Court at The Hague.

According to Kibamba, the sight of police vans taking over the streets of Dar es Salaam shows that Tanzania is sliding fast into a police state, all because a ruling elite knows it doesn’t actually have the backing of the people.
