With 218 days to go until the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, preparations for Team South Africa (SA) are progressing well, according to SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee High-Performance Manager Leon Fleisher.
The 2026 Games will take place in Glasgow from July 19 to August 2. This edition features only 10 sports, with disciplines such as rugby and hockey removed from the programme. Fleisher believes athletics and swimming will once again be the country’s main medal prospects.
Although SA will send a smaller squad than in previous Games, the focus remains on competitiveness and maximising medal returns. Fleisher highlighted the role of programmes such as the Bidvest OPEX initiative in helping athletes prepare effectively for the event.
