Thirteen suspected illegal miners are expected to appear in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court in the Mpumalanga province, South Africa (SA) this Tuesday.
The suspects, including two women, were arrested during an intelligence-driven Operation Vala Umgodi conducted in Sabie over the weekend.
The latest arrests bring the total number of suspected illegal miners arrested to 22 since the sporadic shootout between rival illegal mining gangs in the province.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Donald Mdluli says all the suspects are foreign nationals from Mozambique and eSwatini.
The suspects are all foreign nationals, twelve are from Mozambique while one is from the Kingdom of Eswatini they are expected to appear at Sabie Magistrates Court on October 6 20206 this bring to a total of 22 suspected illegal miners who were arrested by the police over the weekend , the suspects are facing charges related to illegal mining, possession of gold bearing materials, gold bearing equipments and contravention of immigration Act of SA.”
