Thousands of film and television workers are taking to the streets this week, warning that South Africa’s (SA) film and television industry is on the brink of collapse
A march took place in Cape Town yesterday, with another planned for today in Pretoria as part of the ‘Save SA Film Jobs’ campaign. The coalition says the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s film and TV incentive system has stalled for almost two years, forcing productions to shut down and workers to lose jobs. Chairperson of Animation SA, Xolile Vundla says government must intevene
“As indicated we had the first leg of the march at the parliamentary precinct yesterday. Today the second leg takes our protest to the department of trade campus in Pretoria. This is a serious matter because the industry is on the verge of collapse. We’re losing investor confidence in our market for film and TV production. The end consequence is a loss of jobs,” Vundla said.
