 ‘Tough road ahead’ for newly-elected New York Mayor

Some political experts say the election of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor of the United States (US) city of New York is a positive development, despite the tough road that lays ahead of him
The 34-year-old won the race after using a campaign that was largely focused on the cost of living, childcare and corporate taxes. Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, spent time in Cape Town before moving to the US at the age of seven. Honorary Professor of International Relations at South Africa’s University of Witwatersrand, John Stremlau.
“Now the test becomes whether or not he can deliver on his basic promises of a better life for the average New Yorker, um healthcare and education and the extent to which the city can do that, housing, um and that’s and transportation and that’s um uh going to be a big challenges for him, but he is certainly an impressive fellow,” he said.
