Meteorologist Joel Guy says the heavy rains affecting parts of South Africa (SA), Mozambique and Zimbabwe over the past few days are the result of a tropical low-pressure system.
Guy has clarified that the weather system is not a tropical cyclone. He explained that it developed in parts of Mozambique, particularly around the Beira area, before moving inland.
Communities in SA and Mozambique have been among the hardest hit, with flooding reported in several areas following persistent heavy downpours. The rains have caused damage to infrastructure, disrupting roads and essential services.
According to Guy, the system moved into the border regions of Zimbabwe, Mozambique and SA over the weekend and has remained almost stationary.
“It has been sitting in these areas for most of the week, at least until Wednesday, and during that time it has continued to produce the heavy rainfall we have been seeing,” he said.
He added that the system’s lack of movement explains the continuous rain experienced across Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.
