Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has publicly backed his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to run for the Presidency in the 2031 general election, effectively clearing the path for a long-rumoured family succession.

The move puts an end to months of intense political speculation over who will eventually succeed the veteran leader, who has held power for four decades.

Muhoozi, who serves as the Chief of Defence Forces, has steadily stepped into the political spotlight in recent years, using his “Patriotic League of Uganda” movement to build a popular base outside the traditional ruling party apparatus.
