The University of Johannesburg, in partnership with Channel Africa and telecommunications giant MTN, opened a two-day Media Innovation Summit this Tuesday, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and social ties between South Africa (SA) and Nigeria.
Running through Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the gathering brings together media professionals, communication experts, and civil society representatives in SA to explore how ethical, accurate reporting can promote mutual understanding and social cohesion between two of the continent’s major nations.
Delegates will focus heavily on examining media coverage of Nigeria–SA relations to identify and address long-standing media biases, sensationalism, and cultural stereotypes.
The summit comes at a critical juncture for the African continent, as media ecosystems grapple with rapid geopolitical shifts, fragile political alliances, and the rising threat of digital misinformation.
