UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Major General Junhui Wu as the new Force Commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Major General Junhui Wu as the new Force Commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Wu, who is from China, will lead the mission’s military component tasked with protecting civilians and supporting the implementation of the peace process in South Sudan.

The UN says Wu brings decades of military leadership experience and has previously served in several senior positions within the Chinese armed forces. His role will involve overseeing peacekeeping troops deployed across the country, co-ordinating security operations, and working closely with UNMISS leadership and South Sudanese authorities.

UNMISS remains one of the UN’s largest peacekeeping operations, with thousands of peacekeepers stationed across the country. The mission was established in 2011 following South Sudan’s independence, with a mandate to protect civilians, monitor human rights, and support humanitarian assistance.

Wu succeeds Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian of India, who previously served as Force Commander. The Secretary-General thanked Subramanian for his service and contribution to the mission.
