United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the unconditional release of all Israeli hostages and described the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza as being on a scale that “defies comprehension.”
Today marking two years since the Hamas-led attack on Israel, Guterres condemned the assault as “abhorrent” and urged that the day be used to honour all those who were killed and suffered horrific violence.
He appealed for an end to the loss of civilian lives and futures, welcoming United States President Donald Trump’s peace proposal as a possible opportunity to end the long-running conflict.
Guterres highlighted that a permanent ceasefire and a credible political process were vital to prevent further bloodshed and to pave the way for a lasting peace.
“Only through dialogue and mutual respect can Israelis, Palestinians, and all peoples of the region live side by side in security, dignity, and peace,” Guterres said.
