United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the situation in Tanzania following the general election held on October 29.

This is amid reports of deaths and injuries during demonstrations.

In a statement, Guterres deplored the loss of life and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. He said he was deeply troubled by reports of enforced disappearances and detentions in the lead-up to the elections.

The UN Chief urged Tanzanian authorities to ensure due process for all those detained, safeguard their safety and security, and conduct impartial investigations into all allegations of human rights violations in line with international human rights standards.

Guterres called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, reject violence, and engage in inclusive and constructive dialogue to address grievances and prevent further escalation.

He reiterated that the UN stood ready to support national efforts aimed at fostering dialogue, strengthening democratic governance, and promoting sustainable peace in Tanzania.
