The United Nations (UN) will mark the annual International Day of Peace on Monday, September 21, 2026, under the global theme “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”
First established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 and designated as a 24-hour period of non-violence and cease-fire in 2001, the observance highlights the critical need for global stability and human dignity.
In an official message ahead of the observance, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged world leaders and global citizens to support local “everyday architects of peace” by strengthening diplomacy, protecting human rights, and expanding investments in education and social protection.
The UN encouraged communities worldwide to participate in local peacebuilding initiatives, youth-led dialogue circles, and educational campaigns under the official hashtag #InvestInPeace.
