UNESCO spotlights South Sudan’s journey 15 years after Independence

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is hosting a high-level spotlight session at its headquarters in Paris today to mark the 15th anniversary of South Sudan’s independence, focusing heavily on how education and cultural preservation are driving peacebuilding in the country.

The event brings together South Sudanese state officials, UN representatives, and international development partners to review the country’s progress despite persistent challenges like political instability, severe climate shocks, and economic hardship.

A central focus of the session is how local communities are being reconnected ahead of upcoming national elections. Organisers are showcasing a project backed by the Japan International Co-operation Agency that rehabilitates community radio stations across South Sudan, using local media to encourage civic participation and prevent conflict.

The global body is also highlighting initiatives aimed at preserving South Sudan’s diverse cultural identity, such as the recent Torit Cultural Festival, and vocational training programs funded by Sweden that equip crisis-affected youth with practical skills.

UN officials highlight that while South Sudan’s journey remains complex, investing in grassroots communication, education, and heritage offers the most sustainable path toward long-term national resilience.
