The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has held talks within the framework of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)-Burundi Tripartite Commission to discuss the voluntary repatriation of Congolese refugees living in Burundi.
The discussions focused strictly on verifying whether current security conditions in the eastern DRC are conducive to safe, dignified, and sustainable refugee returns that align with international protection standards. Participants explored necessary measures to support the reintegration of returning families into local communities, amid intensified efforts by regional stakeholders to address the underlying causes of displacement, such as ongoing conflict, insecurity, and limited access to essential services.
The UNHCR and its partners re-emphasised that any eventual return process must remain entirely voluntary, with guaranteed protection for the safety, dignity, and rights of the refugees.
