US player Jacob Bridgeman won the Genesis Invitational golf tournament
United States (US) player Jacob Bridgeman won the Genesis Invitational golf tournament in Los Angeles, US, by one shot, becoming the first man since 1975 to win the prestigious event in his tournament debut.
The 26 year old held a seven shot lead early in the day and overcame a nervy last round to fend of compatriot Kurt Kitayama and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy.
Bridgeman started the final round with a commanding 6 shots advantage and extended  his lead early on.
But he gave the rest of the field some hope after that, dropping shots on holes four and seven, while his closest rivals, McIlroy and Kitayama turned up the heat.
A bogey on the 17th added to the pressure on Bridgeman.
He still had a one shot advantage on the final hole and managed to hold his nerve and claim the victory.
He finished on 18 under after a final round of 1 over par 72, while Mcilroy and Kitayama were tied 2nd on 17 under.
SA’s Aldrich Potgieter completed the tournament in 15 under par, three shots behind the winner and in fifth place.
