US has announced a military blockade of Iranian ports

The United States (US) has announced a military blockade of Iranian ports and coastal waters around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for 20% of global oil flows.

The move follows peace talks between the US and Iran, in Islamabad, Pakistan, which ended without agreement over the weekend.

While the US insists that the ceasefire is holding, Iran says that the country changed terms, preventing a deal from materialising.

The weekend talks were the first direct US and Iran discussions in over a decade.

Despite no breakthrough, US President Donald Trump says that the talks went well with most points agreed to.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, fired back on social media, accusing the US of moving the goalposts and collapsing a near complete deal to end the six-week war.

Trump responded by announcing a US military blockade of all maritime traffic into and out of Iranian ports and coastal waters, effective Monday.
