Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda peace process
The United States (US ) is hosting Senior Officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda this week in a renewed diplomatic push to revive the stalled peace process in eastern DRC.
Bilateral engagements between Washington and each country had been scheduled for Tuesday, with a trilateral meeting expected to be held on Wednesday.

The talks will mark the first high-level engagements since the US Department of Treasury imposed sanctions earlier this month on the 2nd targeting the Rwanda Defence Force and four Senior Officers.

Washington has accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group, a claim Kigali continues to deny.
The diplomatic talks come amidst the backdrop of heightened tensions following the M23’s rapid territorial expansion in eastern DRC last year in January, which has significantly destabilised the region.

The meetings also coincide with the Powering Africa Summit currently being held in the US capital, which is being attended by African government officials, including energy Ministers.
