Economists are warning that South African (SA) households may face higher prices this festive season as a result of United States (US) imposed tariffs on the country’s goods.
In 2025, geopolitical tensions led to the introduction of 30% tariffs on most SA exports to the US.
The levies have had a knock-on effect on agriculture, mining, and manufacturing industries that rely heavily on US market access. The economic ripple includes job losses, reduced competitiveness, and rising costs for consumers.
SABC News Economics Reporter Katlego Legodi says shoppers should brace for the impact as retailers adjust prices to cope with the tariffs.
