United States (US) authorities are withholding entry visas for Sudanese Armed Forces leader General Abdel Fattah al Burhan and his official delegation ahead of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
Washington has tied the release of the travel documents to Burhan accepting a proposed 90-day ceasefire designed to pause fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. The decision was communicated to Sudanese officials shortly before their planned departure for the annual gathering, prompting Sudan’s permanent mission at the UN to lodge a formal complaint with Secretary General Antonio Guterres over host country commitments.
Guterres says it is currently engaging American diplomats to resolve the matter and uphold the UN Headquarters Agreement. Washington has continued to push both warring factions toward a binding humanitarian truce as fighting and displacement persist across the country.
