Venezuela Cites Western double standards in ICC exit

Venezuela has officially initiated its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the tribunal of systemic bias against nations across Latin America and Africa.

Venezuela formally notified United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres of its decision to denounce the Rome Statute following directives from Interim President Delcy Rodríguez. The decision comes while the Hague-based court continues its investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed under former President Nicolás Maduro.

Speaking on the tribunal’s actions, Rodríguez criticised the court for targeting the country, asserting that the ICC has built up a legacy of hostility toward the Global South. She stated that the institution has been politicised and weaponised against the Venezuelan state, declaring that the government no longer recognises its authority.
