President Carlos Vila Nova has officially announced his bid for a second term ahead of São Tomé and Príncipe’s presidential election

President Carlos Vila Nova has officially announced his bid for a second term ahead of São Tomé and Príncipe’s presidential election scheduled for July 19.

Speaking during a ceremony in the capital, São Tomé, Vila Nova said he was entering the race “not as a candidate of political parties, but as a candidate of the nation”, while stressing the importance of stability and confidence in the country’s future.

His announcement marks the beginning of a new phase in the country’s political landscape, with debates around continuity, governance and economic reform expected to dominate the campaign period.

Political analyst Liberato Moniz said Vila Nova’s decision could reshape the political dynamics ahead of the polls.

According to Moniz, Vila Nova is positioning himself as a figure of national unity rather than a partisan candidate; a strategy he believes may appeal to voters seeking political stability amid ongoing economic and social challenges.

Moniz also noted that the election campaign is likely to focus heavily on issues of governance, economic opportunities and public confidence in state institutions as candidates compete to convince voters ahead of the July election.
