Vote counting has begun in Guinea-Bissau following the country’s presidential and legislative elections, with incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló locked in a tight battle.
If he wins, Embaló will become the first leader in more than 30 years to secure a second consecutive term.
The 53-year-old former Army General is facing 11 other candidates. Observers say the race is likely to be closed, and a runoff will be held if no candidate receives more than half of the votes.
Professor Gorgui Dieng of the Laboratory of African and Postcolonial Studies at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, said the election underscores the ongoing challenges of political stability and democratic consolidation in Guinea-Bissau.
