Vote counting is underway in Zambia after millions cast their ballots in the 2026 general elections. Incumbent Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema is seeking a second five-year term after steering Zambia through an economic rebound.
Hichilema is seeking a second five-year term after steering Zambia through an economic rebound. The Electoral Commission of Zambia is expected to declare the results by Monday. The winner needs more than 50% of votes to avoid a run-off.
Speaking after addressing the media shortly after casting his vote at Kabulonga Boys secondary school in Lusaka, Hichilema hailed the election as peaceful.
“The peaceful election is a reflection of the peace and the vision of peace, security, stability that this government has brought about. If you understand this country, in the last election 2021, it was chaotic, it was noisy, it was bloody, it was really scary, but we brought calmness in the country.”
