WADA calls for clean sport culture in Kenya ahead of 2029 World Athletics Championships

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) President Witold Bańka has called on Kenyan sports authorities and government officials to institute a firm zero-tolerance policy on doping as the nation prepares to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.

Speaking in Nairobi following consultative meetings with President William Ruto and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), Bańka stressed that establishing an uncompromised culture of clean sport and aggressively dismantling supplier networks of banned substances are vital to protecting athletic integrity.

The 2029 event will mark the first time the flagship World Athletics Championships are staged on the African continent, placing heightened global scrutiny on Kenya’s anti-doping infrastructure.

More than 140 Kenyan athletes, primarily long-distance and marathon runners, have faced suspensions since 2017, making enhanced collaboration between WADA, ADAK, and local law enforcement essential to restoring credibility ahead of 2029.
