Gary Woodland has won his first professional golf title

American Gary Woodland has won his first professional golf title in seven years, taking the honours at the Houston Open in Texas.

It was an emotional breakthrough for Woodland, who had an operation to remove a brain tumour in September 2023.

Woodland won the United States Open in 2019 but battled in the years after that.

He also revealed recently that he struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder after his surgery.

Woodland beat Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard by five shots to clinch the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) Tour event in Texas.

The American carded a final round of 3-under 67 and finished on 21-under for the tournament.

And in a PGA Tour Champions event, 52-year-old Stewart Cink captured his third title in five starts with a win at the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California.

He now has six wins since joining the senior ranks. Two-time Hoag Classic champion and World Golf Hall of Fame member, South Africa’s Ernie Els, finished tied 2nd at 15-under.
This is his 18th top-two finish on the PGA Tour Champions.

Cink leads the season-long Charles Schwab Cup Money list, while Els is in 6th position.
