Malawi has secured an $80 million grant from the World Bank Group

Malawi has secured an $80 million grant from the World Bank Group to improve local governance and boost public service delivery across all 32 district councils.

The funding, provided through the International Development Association, will support the Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project aimed at strengthening decentralisation and improving how public resources are managed at local level.

The announcement follows Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha’s recent visit to the United States, where he attended the 2026 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

World Bank Country Manager for Malawi Firas Raad said the project will help build capacity within local councils to deliver services more effectively.

He added that the initiative is expected to strengthen accountability and improve the quality of public services at community level across the country.
