Zambia has confirmed the detection of poliovirus in the capital, Lusaka

Zambia has confirmed the detection of poliovirus in the capital, Lusaka, raising concern nearly three decades after the country last recorded a case in 1995.

The development adds to growing regional health concerns following similar detections in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Angola and Namibia. Health authorities say the situation threatens Zambia’s long-standing polio-free status.

Acting Health Minister, who also serves as Information Minister, Cornelius Mweetwa, alongside the World Health Organisation country representative Dr Clement Lasuba and Resident Doctors Association of Zambia President Paul Chibwe, has urged citizens to maintain high hygiene standards and ensure children receive vaccinations.

Officials say vaccination and community vigilance remain critical to preventing further spread of the virus.
