Zambian police and military forces allegedly subjected opposition members, supporters, lawyers, journalists and government critics to a range of atrocities.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) say in a newly released report that victims were subjected to enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, beatings and threats in the days leading up to and following the August 2026 general elections.
The report, titled Zambia: Widespread Repression in Post-Election Crackdown, allege authorities are also yet to credibly explain or investigate the killing of an opposition leader in contested circumstances.
