Zambian authorities have shut down a notorious illegal gold mining site in the country’s north-west following a military operation.

The site, located in Mufumbwe district about 800 kilometres from the capital Lusaka, had become a major economic and security concern. More than 50 000 people, including Zambian nationals and foreigners, are reported to have infiltrated the gold-rich area to engage in illegal mining and related activities.

Officials say the scale of the operation posed serious risks, prompting decisive intervention to restore order and curb unlawful exploitation of mineral resources.
