Zambia’s Electoral Commission has announced plans to increase the number of constituencies in the country from 156 to 226

Zambia’s Electoral Commission (ECZ) has announced plans to increase the number of constituencies in the country from 156 to 226, in a move aimed at improving representation ahead of the general elections scheduled for August 13 this year.

The decision follows last year’s signing into law of Bill seven by President Hakainde Hichilema. The legislation seeks to reform the composition of the National Assembly by creating greater space for the inclusion of women, young people and persons with disabilities in Zambia’s governance structures.

According to the ECZ, the addition of 70 constituencies is part of broader electoral and governance reforms intended to address demographic shifts, population growth and long-standing concerns about equitable representation across the country’s provinces.

The changes come at a significant political moment, as Zambia prepares for what will be a tightly watched election season. Voters will cast their ballots in the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections on the same day.
