Zambia says construction of a modern border post in Solwezi will begin next month

Zambia says construction of a modern border post in Solwezi will begin next month under a newly signed $140 million public-private partnership project.

The Kimiswalo Border and Road project is aimed at improving trade links between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by speeding up the movement of copper, mining equipment and agricultural products across the border.

According to Zambia’s Ministry of Finance, full implementation of the Kimiswalo Public-Private Partnership (PPP) will start in June.

The new trade gateway, located in Zambia’s North-Western Province, forms part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce long delays for trucks transporting minerals and other commercial goods into and out of the DRC.

Trade experts say the upgraded facility could significantly ease congestion along one of the region’s busiest mining and transport corridors.

The Kimiswalo initiative is among several infrastructure partnerships being rolled out under Zambia’s Eighth National Development Plan to improve transport networks and boost exports.
