Zambia’s Constitutional Court has rejected an attempt to block Speaker Nelly Mutti’s decision to declare the Chawama parliamentary seat vacant

Zambia’s Constitutional Court has rejected an attempt to block Speaker Nelly Mutti’s decision to declare the Chawama parliamentary seat vacant, clearing the way for a by-election on January 15, 2026.

Chawama is a constituency in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city, represented in the National Assembly. It is home to thousands of residents and is considered an important urban electoral area, often drawing attention from political parties during elections.

The seat became vacant after member of parliament Tasila Lungu was absent for over six months, due in part to matters surrounding the burial of her father, former President Edgar Lungu.

Political analyst Daimone Siulapwa told Africa Upadet that the court’s ruling reflects Zambia’s commitment to parliamentary rules while balancing personal circumstances of elected officials.

The upcoming by-election is expected to be closely watched as parties prepare campaigns to represent Chawama, a constituency where urban issues and community needs often shape political debates.
