Several opposition parties and independent organisations in Zambia, including the Forum for Democracy and Development, have rejected the government’s proposal to increase the number of parliamentary seats by 70.
The plan, initiated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), was launched on Monday, February 16, 2026, with consultations aimed at gathering views from traditional leaders, political figures, religious groups, and other stakeholders.
Opposition leaders argue that the expansion is unnecessary and risks entrenching political power, while the ECZ has maintained that the exercise seeks to ensure fair representation across the country.
Daniel Elisha Banda reports that the consultations are expected to continue over the coming weeks as the commission collects public input on the proposed changes.
