Zambians living in the United States (US) are planning demonstrations outside the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York this week, as world leaders gather for the UN General Assembly.
The protests follow Zambia’s general elections of August 13, in which President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner of a second term.
The European Union’s election observation mission said polling day was largely calm, and voters were presented with a competitive choice.
However, it raised concerns about an uneven playing field, including conditions that affected the fairness of the electoral process.
The mission later reported what it described as serious incidents and procedural irregularities during the counting and tabulation of results.
Regional and Continental Observer Missions also identified areas of concern while calling on political actors to pursue electoral disputes through peaceful and established legal processes.
