Zambian religious leaders warn against fake news and election violence

Zambia’s three main church organisations have issued a joint condemnation of the rising tide of hate speech, political violence, and fake news ahead of the country’s upcoming elections, reporter Daniel Elisha Banda reports.

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Council of Churches in Zambia, and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia raised the alarm over an increasingly toxic political climate. With Zambia gearing up for crucial tripartite elections on August 13, the religious bodies expressed deep concern over the surge in inflammatory rhetoric and conflict-inciting language.

The church leaders warned that the spread of misinformation and politically motivated clashes threaten the nation’s peace, urging all parties to reject violence and commit to a peaceful campaign.
