Zambia’s President-elect Hakainde Hichilema is expected to be sworn in next Tuesday. Hichilema was re-elected for a second five-year term following the general elections held on August 13.
The Zambia Electoral Commission announced that Hichilema secured a decisive victory with roughly 61% of the total vote.
Defeating his primary opposition challenger, Brian Mundubile, who garnered 38% of the votes.
However, the results have not been accepted.
The opposition’s plan to challenge the election results in court have been severely disrupted because the government closed and sealed off the country’s entire court system on Monday and the final day of the legal window to file a petition.
