The government of Zimbabwe has announced the suspension of exports of unprocessed precious stones until further notice.
Authorities say the decision was taken because the stones have been sold in their raw form, without being cut or polished, resulting in them fetching lower prices on international markets.
The government says the move is aimed at ensuring the country derives greater value from its mineral resources by promoting local processing before export.
Economic analysts suggest the policy could help strengthen Zimbabwe’s cutting and polishing industry, create employment opportunities and increase national revenue.
