Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC may have left South Africa (SA) without the Toyota Cup, but coach Norman Mapeza believes the trip delivered something more valuable ahead of their maiden CAF Champions League campaign.
Scottland lost 1-0 to SA side Kaizer Chiefs, with Mfundo Vilakazi scoring the only goal of the match.
Mapeza used the fixture to test the depth of his squad, fielding completely different line-ups in each half.
He says playing quality opposition away from home has given his players a useful measure of the demands they can expect when they step onto the continental stage.
“Football is more or less the same all over the world. I can’t really say there was a huge difference between us and Kaizer Chiefs. Of course, the scoreline says Kaizer Chiefs won 1-0, and maybe that was the difference. But, like I said, I’m more than happy with what I saw from the players. We have to go back, work hard, and prepare for the CAF Champions League,” says Mapeza.
