Appearing on The Upside show, Sout African Soweto-born culinary producer and food stylist Chef Sibu Nyembe showcased a spread of visual, high-quality dishes designed to fit tight household budgets. With over fifteen years of industry experience, including working in SA and moving overseas to work in the United States on the MasterChef franchise, Nyembe specialises in simplifying luxury meals for everyday kitchens.

During the live studio showcase, Nyembe demonstrated how to transform accessible, everyday ingredients into fine-dining structures, keeping the average cost of his curated plates to roughly R80 ($4.50), each. He explained that a single plate can be produced within this budget and easily stretched to feed an entire household. His menu featured a herbed potato mash paired with braised giblets, where he used the chicken broth, or umhluzu, to create a rich gravy base. He also prepared a chicken roulade by stuffing a budget-friendly chicken breast with herbs, cooking it in boiling water, and finishing it in a pan with butter and color.

To keep the menu interactive and family-friendly, Nyembe built homemade beef burgers using cost-effective mince, fresh cheddar, salad greens, and standard bakery rolls that cost just R3($0.16) apiece. He also highlighted traditional African ingredients by pairing the chicken roulade with sorghum, alongside an unplanned vegetarian sorghum salad topped with fresh guacamole sourced from local street vendors and seasonal market vegetables like carrots and baby marrow. While sorghum takes time to cook, Nyembe noted that preparing it in structured stages prevents high electricity consumption.

Beyond sharing recipes, Nyembe emphasised that formal culinary education is essential for consumer safety in an era of self-taught social media cooks. He completed a professional cookery internship that balanced hospitality theory with practical hotel kitchen work, noting that a formal qualification ensures cooks understand food safety, correct ingredient separation, and how to avoid food poisoning.

–ChannelAfrica–

[329,188
post-35486","lifestyle-ent","type-lifestyle-ent","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","featured-post-budget","featured-post-food","entry
["GET
