The SABS plays a critical role in setting and maintaining South Africa\u2019s national standards. However, the institution has faced a series of controversies, including allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and poor governance.<\/p>\n
These issues have been brought to light by whistleblowers.<\/p>\n
Professor Tyobeka stated that their first priority is to appoint a permanent Chief Executive Officer (CEO).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first task for the board is to address the appointment of a permanent CEO and ensure that all executive positions are filled. I can tell you that more than, let\u2019s say, 60 to 70% of senior and executive management at the SABS are currently serving in an acting capacity. That does not bode well for good governance, as it undermines full accountability. Therefore, our starting point is to stabilise senior executive management.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that they would also work to foster harmonious relations between management, staff, and trade unions.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the issues we\u2019ve identified is the ongoing disharmony between staff, management, and the unions. This has persisted for years, with accusations and counter-accusations. You cannot achieve stability in an organisation where employment relations are not harmonious. We believe there is space for both the union and management to co-exist and take the organisation forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
