{"id":12971,"date":"2025-10-16T10:47:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T08:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhb-webdevelopers\/channelafrica\/news\/zanu-pf-conference-a-turning-point-as-mnangagwa-faces-backlash-over-2030-power-bid-analyst\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:26:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:26:06","slug":"zanu-pf-conference-a-turning-point-as-mnangagwa-faces-backlash-over-2030-power-bid-analyst","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/zanu-pf-conference-a-turning-point-as-mnangagwa-faces-backlash-over-2030-power-bid-analyst\/","title":{"rendered":"ZANU-PF conference a \u2018turning point\u2019 as Mnangagwa faces backlash over 2030 power bid: Analyst"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The conference is taking place amid deepening internal divisions and mounting public suspicion over President Emmerson Mnangagwa\u2019s alleged plans to extend his stay in power beyond 2028.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Political Analyst and former Journalist Jealousy Mawarire says the gathering is \u201cno longer just important to ZANU-PF, but to all peace-loving Zimbabweans,\u201d warning that it could be used to \u201cmutilate the constitution\u201d to allow Mnangagwa to rule until 2035.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy centres on the so-called ED2030 campaign, a push reportedly backed by senior party officials and linked to a proposed parliamentary motion known as the Breaking of Barriers Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mawarire alleges that the initiative is being advanced through a South African (SA)-registered consultancy and supported by inducements such as vehicles and electronic devices to secure political loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He criticised the President for presiding over \u201ca party that is trying to undermine the very constitution he was sworn in to uphold,\u201d accusing him of \u201csetting in motion processes to ensure he stays in power until 2035.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga have intensified, particularly over allegations of corruption.
