{"id":14352,"date":"2025-11-03T05:44:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T03:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhb-webdevelopers\/channelafrica\/news\/un-pledges-4-million-in-emergency-aid-as-jamaica-reels-from-hurricane-melissa\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:26:59","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:26:59","slug":"un-pledges-4-million-in-emergency-aid-as-jamaica-reels-from-hurricane-melissa","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/un-pledges-4-million-in-emergency-aid-as-jamaica-reels-from-hurricane-melissa\/","title":{"rendered":"UN pledges $4 million in emergency aid as Jamaica reels from Hurricane Melissa"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Melissa struck the island as a category 5 storm last week.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres spoke with Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Sunday, emphasising that \u201cinternational support is crucial\u201d as the country deals with the hurricane\u2019s catastrophic aftermath of torrential rain, storm surges and flooding.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cHe calls for the mobilisation of massive resources to deal with the loss and damage from the hurricane,\u201d said the Deputy UN Spokesperson following the call.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The UN Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, Tom Fletcher, has allocated $4 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to enable UN agencies and partners to rapidly scale up humanitarian operations in Jamaica.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Five days after the most powerful storm in Jamaica\u2019s history made landfall in the west, many residents remain cut off from assistance, with several roads inaccessible and entire communities without electricity or running water. The Government confirmed on Saturday that the death toll had risen to at least 28.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Dennis Zulu, the UN\u2019s top representative in Jamaica, said around 13 UN agencies were working alongside national authorities to clear roads and carry out emergency repairs. \u201cMy team here remains committed to ensure that Jamaica gets back on its feet,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The UN&#8217;s children fund (UNICEF) reported that more than 700 000 children across the Caribbean have been affected by Hurricane Melissa, which also struck Cuba and western Haiti. The agency is supporting the Jamaican Government to reach over 284 000 children with nutrition assistance, safe water, sanitation and hygiene services, as well as mental health support.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In Haiti, UNICEF is deploying hygiene and emergency health kits, cash support for vulnerable households and community engagement initiatives.
