{"id":14728,"date":"2025-11-07T05:14:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T03:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jhb-webdevelopers\/channelafrica\/news\/un-genocide-adviser-raises-alarm-over-alleged-war-crimes-in-sudans-el-fasher\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T16:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:27:12","slug":"un-genocide-adviser-raises-alarm-over-alleged-war-crimes-in-sudans-el-fasher","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/un-genocide-adviser-raises-alarm-over-alleged-war-crimes-in-sudans-el-fasher\/","title":{"rendered":"UN genocide adviser raises alarm over alleged war crimes in Sudan\u2019s El Fasher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beyani said that he plans to meet his African Union counterpart on Friday to discuss a co-ordinated response.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beyani, who recently assumed his role, said there were \u201cmassive violations of international human rights law\u201d and \u201cdirect attacks on civilians\u201d by warring parties in Darfur.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce our office sounds the alarm, the alarm rings over and beyond the ordinary violations of human rights or of international humanitarian law,\u201d he said on Thursday. \u201cIt indicates that the threshold is about to be crossed, and therefore, there has to be early action taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He confirmed that he had spoken to the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown, and would issue an advisory to Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the Security Council, and other UN bodies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Graphic reports and videos that surfaced late last month appear to show atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia after it seized control of El Fasher from Government troops, ending more than 500 days of siege.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher told the Security Council on October 31 that \u201cthe horror is continuing\u201d in Darfur, warning that civilians remain trapped amid widespread violence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beyani\u2019s office said several risk indicators for atrocity crimes are now present in Sudan, though it emphasised that only an international court can make a legal determination of genocide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The International Criminal Court also voiced \u201cprofound alarm\u201d on Monday, saying it was gathering evidence of mass killings, rapes and other atrocities allegedly committed in El Fasher.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, reports indicate that the RSF has agreed to a \u201chumanitarian ceasefire\u201d proposed by the United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The UN has warned of worsening conditions in North Darfur, where thousands displaced from El Fasher are facing acute shortages of food, water, shelter and medical care.
